Women’s Health Project (WHP) receives Award Recognition

Interview with Dr. Laila Gardezi

“Happy Mothers’ Network”
Society for Family Health, Nigeria “Women’s Health Project” recently received global recognition for the innovation and efficiency exhibited in the execution of their social franchising initiative. This pioneer social franchising initiative involves incorporating willing private sector health facilities, not government, through a system of having operating procedures in place. The private sector health facilities which are part of the franchise are provided with global standard services including capacity building of service providers and ensuring minimum standards of quality.
SFH Nigeria’s WHP currently has 282 private sector health facilities which undergo regular supervising for checks and balances; where WHP teaches quality of care, quality procedures, equipment provision, assessing and upgrading quality of service and providing similar standardized products in the independent autonomous private sector facilities. One of the challenges with the private sector health facilities is getting them to accept the different forms of training and upgrades collectively.
The SFH Nigeria WHP franchise is called “Happy Mothers Network”. The private sector health companies that accept to join the franchise receive the Happy Mother’s Network signage. Such organizations value being part of a network where they will be promoted as benefits of being part of the franchise include:
a. signage
b. promotion of the health facility through an introduction to the community by IPC teams
c. Radio broadcasting of key messages.
These create demand for the facilities; hence building the supply side and linking demand and supply together.
Social Franchising
There are about 50 social franchises in 152 countries all over the world; Population Services International (PSI) manages many franchises. There are a compendium of franchises which have been developed; the brainchild of the University of San Francisco which spearheads the concept of social franchising.
About nine months ago, questionnaires were sent out to find out the reach and contribution of franchises around the world.  SFH Nigeria responded and was shortlisted for clarifications for the answers given. In September, the Happy Mother’s Network was informed that they were part of franchises in 14 countries that were found to have the capacity to develop into one of the major franchises in the world.
A social franchising conference held a week ago in Mombasa, Kenya where 11 top franchises were identified and the Happy Mothers Network was selected to receive global recognition of creativity, innovation and prioritization of quality assurance.
Impact on Society for Family Health Nigeria
Through the Happy Mothers’ Network franchise, SFH Nigeria is building Nigeria’s healthcare in more than one area of health care; SFH Nigeria is also establishing a platform for influencing healthcare policies in Nigeria. SFH Nigeria is proud to pioneer Social Franchising which is the future for private healthcare in Nigeria.
