Senior delegates from SFH Nigeria recently visited the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sultan Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, in a much appreciated outing during which an insightful discussion was held about the way forward for health in Nigeria especially the North West and North East zones. SFH currently implements the Gates Maternal and Child Health project in Gombe and Adamawa states, and also implements programmes in many of the states in the North West zone, with offices in Sokoto, Kano and Kaduna states.
The visit, which was part of the Expanded Social Marketing Project In Nigeria (ESMPIN) regional launch held in Sokoto state, was an eye-opener to the tremendous achievements recorded in polio reduction among others, by traditional rulers in the North. The SFH delegation was informed by His Eminence, that polio cases dropped significantly thanks to the intervention of the Center for Inter Faith Action (CIFA) supported by government and some other donors. The UN had commended this effort publicly given the difficulty they had in the past over the issue of polio vaccination coverage.
His Eminence Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar stated the roles of the Northern traditional committees on Family Health as well as UNFPA’s role with antenatal clinic campaigns in the region. He emphasized awareness of the public health challenges while calling for more collaboration and partnership with SFH on Family Planning and maternal health.
Sir Bright Ekweremadu, the leader of the SFH delegation, reassured Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar of SFH Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring positive progress in family health in Northern Nigeria especially for mothers and children as more healthy mothers will mean a healthier community. Other members of the SFH delegation included SFH Nigeria’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Wale Adedeji and Hajia (Dr) Hajo Sani (OON) among others.
SFH Nigeria looks forward to additional collaboration with traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria, as this will help in improving maternal and newborn health, considering the important role traditional leaders play in building the right enabling environment for appropriate maternal and child health practices.
