Linking Pregnant Women to Maternal Health Services in Adamawa State

Mallam Abdulmumuni Ardo is a member of National Union of Road Transport Workers. He is also a trained volunteer driver with Comic Relief Emergency Transport Scheme project implemented by Society for Family Health (SFH) Yola.

Inspired by experience sharing from other ETS volunteer drivers during refresher training, Mallam Ardo decided to embark on mass awareness creation exercise on ETS project and his availability to provide the services round the clock and every day.

On the 15th of March, 2017, Mallam Ardo got a distress call at about 2:00am to transport a pregnant woman (Husaina Adamu) from Nasarawo Ward in Demsa LGA to a health facility for medical attention. Without delay, he responded swiftly and transported the woman to the General Hospital in Numan. An hour later, the woman gave birth to triplets without any issue. The family who benefited from his service expressed their gratitude for his timely response by saying “nobody knows the benefit of any good thing until he or she is a direct beneficiary especially if the benefit is gotten in the nick of time”.

Mallam Ardo works closely with his four wives who are active members of Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) in Demsa LGA to create awareness on ETS project through sensitization during monthly meetings of the association. He also gives out his phone number in the Mosque, palace of ward heads and at public gatherings.

This zeal and dedication has allowed Mallam Ardo to rise from being an inactive volunteer driver to receiving the award of third best performing driver in 2016 among 640 volunteer drivers in Adamawa state. This is for transporting a total of 174 pregnant women to health facilities to access medical services.

ETS Project is highly appreciated and Mallam Ardo is now seen in Demsa LGA and the southern senatorial zone of the state as an ETS champion.
